In December last year, the Kai Ika Project expanded to the mighty Hawke’s Bay, bringing our kaupapa of sharing kai and reducing waste to the local community. Since the launch, we’ve proudly shared over 2000kg of fish heads and frames, ensuring these precious parts of the fish reach those who value and cherish them.

Sourcing Fresh Kaimoana
Our fresh kaimoana comes from Star Foods in Napier and Saltwater Seafoods in Hastings. These fish heads and frames still have plenty of nourishment and tasty meat on them, transforming what might otherwise go to waste into a valuable resource for the community.

Community Support
Getting the Kai Ika Project off the ground in Hawke’s Bay has been a team effort. Thanks to the support of Sustainable Hawke’s Bay, LegaSea Hawkes Bay, and our dedicated group of volunteers, we’ve made a real impact. Together, we’ve distributed kai to communities in Flaxmere, Hastings, and as far as the Mahia Peninsula.

Looking Ahead
This year, we’re aiming to expand our distribution network to include Wairoa and Napier, sharing even more fish heads and frames with those who love and appreciate this delicacy.

By working with local fishers, businesses, and community groups, the Kai Ika Project continues to honour the full value of our kaimoana, ensuring it nourishes our people and strengthens our connection to the ocean.

How to Get Involved
Whether you’re a fisher, a seafood business, or simply passionate about sustainable kai, we’d love your support. Reach out to find out how you can join our efforts to share kai, reduce waste, and make a difference in Hawke’s Bay.
