Since 2016, the Kai Ika Project has distributed over 450 tonnes of fish heads and frames to communities in need, preventing significant wastage and feeding families who need the extra kai. It’s safe to say that none of this would have been possible without the incredible support from Papatūānuku Marae and their dedicated team – Lionel, Val, Carlos, Punah, Shaiann, Maria, Leahana, Ramsel, Kopu, Keisha, Leonard, Kharl, Sally and many others. Their tireless efforts have been nothing short of inspiring!

The marae’s ethos is deeply rooted in promoting food sovereignty and steering their communities away from junk food. In a suburb like Mangere, where bottle stores and takeaways are more common than fresh food options, the work of the marae is crucial. They embody the belief that “He kai te rongoā, he rongoā te kai” – food is medicine, and medicine is food.

At Papatūānuku Marae, they’re not just providing food; they’re nurturing a healthier, more sustainable future.

Their commitment to these values aligns perfectly with the goals of the Kai Ika Project and us here at LegaSea. Thanks to their efforts, we’re not only providing nutritious food to those on the breadline but also fostering a sense of community and resilience.

Papatūānuku Kokiri Marae’s dedication to healthier, sustainable food practices goes beyond mere sustenance. They’re helping to build a stronger, more connected community where everyone has access to good, wholesome kai. Their work is a beacon of hope and a model of what food sovereignty can achieve.

Thank you PKM team, for your unwavering support and dedication!
