In 2016 the Outboard Boating Club of Auckland (OBC) approached LegaSea to find a solution to their post filleting fish offcuts. At the same time, LegaSea founder, Scott Macindoe, read an article about the Papatūānuku Kōkiri Marae in South Auckland growing 80,000 kumara to feed their community.
Scott approached Lionel Hotene, the marae kaitiaki, and asked if he wanted 80,000 fish heads to go with his kumara. From there, the Kai Ika idea was born.
